public property: municipal self-storage as a monument to late capitalism (1996)

An international competition seeking ideas for the redevelopment of New York City's Governors' Island, which after two centuries of continuous military use, is now 'vacant' after the departure of the Coast Guard in 1997. The project proposes converting the entire island into a municipal self-storage mega-structure made of glass. Manhattan residents are allocated a storage space on the island proportional to their property in the city. Envisioned as a public monument to the city's accumulation of stuff that it can no longer accommodate, yet simply can't part with. With David Pysh, Jennifer Whitburn, and Wanda Wilmore.
