and is currently
seeking proposals for events and occurrences on a rooftop in lower
Manhattan. The rooftop sits upon a 3-story building that has been
slated for demolition within the next 4 years - part of a development
plan to raise the entire block to make way for a large office tower.
Within this window of time, we are looking to provide a conduit
for a series of projects that in some manner address the context
of the site.
The rooftop
sits above one corner of a busy downtown intersection, and is flanked
by two taller structures whose brick surfaces are visible from the
surrounding streets. It is located within area threaded by dense
traffic flows and saturated by large-scale advertisements. Not really
a public space (but by no means private), the site offers a broad
range of conditions to explore: from seams of publicity and privacy
within contemporary urban space, to conditions of location and allocation
within contemporary real-estate markets, to a comparative analysis
of the aromas and timbres of automobile exhaust systems, for example.
What is sought is work that seeks to engage the situation and conditions
of the specific locale of the site itself - be they physical, social,
material, psychological, perceptual, legal, political, economic
or otherwise. All proposals will be considered.
All inquiries
should be addressed to Mark Shepard via mshepard@andinc.org.
